In light of recent fires in Sun City Carolina Lakes, we thought it would be a good idea to reach out to our local Indian Land Fire Department and ask for some fire safety tips. They had several helpful suggestions to share with Sun City Carolina Lakes residents.

Don’t Fuel the Fire

Limit the sources of dry fuel around your home. For example, use bulky mulch instead of pine straw or finely shredded mulch. Bermuda grass is not encouraged, but since it is used widely throughout our area, make sure your irrigation systems are working properly.

Stay Back

Make sure grill, fire pit or source of flames is at least 10 to 15 feet away from your home.

Open Up

Make sure that you are able to open all doors and windows in your home. Locks and pins should open easily from inside.Check that windows aren’t sealed shut with paint or nails.

Sound the Alarm

Install smoke alarms high on the wall or ceilings in each bedroom and in living areas on every level of the home, For best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms; if one alarm sounds, they all sound. If anyone in your household is deaf or if your own hearing is diminished, consider installing an alarm that uses a flashing light or vibration to alert you.

Test it Out

Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button. If alarm chirps, replace smoke alarm and/or batteries right away.

Stay Connected

Keep a telephone nearby, along with phone numbers so that you can communicate with emergency personnel if you’re trapped in your room by fire or smoke.
